Every month, we break down a Melbourne suburb and discuss its crime statistics using data from Crime Statistics Victoria. This month, we take a look at the two suburbs on either side of Brunswick. This week, we bring you East Brunswick and West Brunswick’s Crime Statistics.

Situated approximately 6 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD East Brunswick has a population of 11,504 citizens. West Brunswick with a population of 14,159 is slightly more populated. Both suburbs straddle Brunswick and as a result benefit from the lively neighbouring suburb. Known for its ‘hipster’ lifestyle, Brunswick in general has everything an inner city suburb needs to thrive.

We compare the crime rates in 2018 to 2019 in both East and West Brunswick to see if the crime rate has increased or decreased.

Top Five Offences in East Brunswick

The Top Five Offences in East Brunswick for 2019 are:

  1. Theft (480 offences)
  2. Burglary/ Breaking and Entering (109)
  3. Property Damage (68)
  4. Breaches of Justice Orders (15)
  5. Assault (29)

The Top Five Offences in East Brunswick for 2018 are:

  1. Theft (453 offences)
  2. Burglary/ Breaking and Entering (108)
  3. Property Damage (68)
  4. Breaches of Justice Orders (43)
  5. Assault (59)

Of the 701 offences recorded in East Brunswick in 2019, Theft made up 68.6%; Burglary, 15.5%; Property Damage 9.7%; Breaches of Orders 2.1%; and Assault 4.1%.

There were reductions in all areas of offences except Theft, Burglary/ Breaking and Entering and Property Damage.

Top Five Offences in West Brunswick

The Top Five Offences in West Brunswick 2019 are:

  1. Theft (367 offences)
  2. Burglary/ Breaking and Entering (63)
  3. Property Damage (61)
  4. Breaches of Justice Orders (57)
  5. Assault (45)

The Top Five Offences in West Brunswick 2018 are:

  1. Theft (431 offences)
  2. Burglary/ Breaking and Entering (114)
  3. Property Damage (61)
  4. Breaches of Justice Orders (60)
  5. Assault (47)

Of the 593 offences recorded in West Brunswick, Theft made up 61.9%; Breaches of Orders, 9.6%; Property Damage, 10.3%; and Assault, 7.6%; and Burglary/ Breaking and Entering, 10.6%.

West Brunswick statistics shows a substantial reduction in theft and Burglary/ Breaking and Entering in the area which is good news for the area, and surrounding suburbs.

Similarities Between East and West Brunswick’s Crime Statistics

For both East and West Brunswick, most crimes were comparable, however West Brunswick performed better in regards to Theft and Burglary/ Breaking and Entering with dramatic increases from the 2018 statistics. East Brunswick had lower rates in Breaches of Justice Orders and Assault.  

Theft was the most common offence reported in both suburbs, over 60% of offences. It is important to note that the theft rate is relatively high in these suburbs and taking appropriate steps to avoid becoming a statistic’s is recommended.
